Shami's Key Role in India's Dominance

In a thrilling start to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the clash between India and Bangladesh in Dubai showcased some remarkable cricket moments, setting the stage for an exciting tournament. Opting to bat first, Bangladesh faced a formidable Indian bowling attack led by Mohammed Shami, whose impeccable performance set the tone for the match. Shami was on fire from the outset, claiming crucial early wickets of Soumya Sarkar and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. His expertise in swinging the ball and maintaining tight lines left Bangladesh struggling at a perilous 35/5 within the first ten overs.

Joining Shami in wreaking havoc were debutant Harshit Rana and Axar Patel, who each chipped in to dismantle Bangladesh's top order. A potential hat-trick for Axar slipped away when Rohit Sharma dropped a crucial catch, allowing Jaker Ali an opportunity to contribute significantly to the innings. This momentary lapse was seized by Bangladesh as Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali mounted a formidable counterattack, forging an impressive 154-run partnership for the sixth wicket—an effort that broke the record for the highest sixth-wicket stand in Champions Trophy history.

Even with Bangladesh putting up a commendable fight, Shami returned during the later stages to clean up the tail, culminating his spell with figures of 5/53 and marking a personal milestone with his 200th ODI wicket. Hridoy's splendid innings saw him reach his maiden century, but his dismissal shortly after completing it marked the end of Bangladesh's innings at 228.

India had a target of 229 runs, and their chase got off to a solid start, thanks to an aggressive opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and the talented Shubman Gill. Rohit's quickfire 41 off 36 balls laid a strong foundation before he fell, but Gill was undeterred, showcasing immense maturity and class as he anchored the innings.

Even as the likes of Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer departed cheaply with scores of 22 and 15 respectively, Gill remained a picture of poise. His calculated strokes and ability to find gaps helped him reach a magnificent unbeaten century, steering India towards victory. Supported ably by KL Rahul, who contributed an unbeaten 41, Gill led the run-chase with calm assurance. The duo's unbroken 87-run partnership saw India over the finish line with 21 balls to spare, sealing the match by six wickets.

Bangladesh's spinners did manage to keep the game in the balance momentarily, but Gill's fine innings ensured that India crossed the line comfortably. With this win, India kicks off their campaign with confidence and will now gear up to face their arch-rivals Pakistan on February 23. Meanwhile, Bangladesh will regroup and prepare to take on New Zealand on February 24.
