Expansion of Wild Coast Raw Cat Food Recall

In a significant development, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has widened its recall of Wild Coast Raw cat food products. The catalyst for this recall is the detection of the H5N1 bird flu virus, a pathogen of concern for both animals and potentially humans. Initially undertaken as a voluntary measure in February 2025, the recall has now been expanded to cover more product lots.

The newly included lot numbers #22660 and #22664 carry the same best-by date of December 2025 as previously identified lots #53,41,22639 and #72. All these recalled products are known for their specific packaging—small, round, white containers distinguished by their green labels. Authorities stress the importance of discarding these items to prevent further exposure and risks.

Recent cases highlight the real-world implications of this contamination. In Washington state, two unfortunate cats tested positive for H5N1 after eating the affected cat food. The situation resulted in one cat being euthanized due to illness severity, while the other required urgent veterinary care.

In a related instance in Oregon, Christine Knopp, a devoted cat breeder, experienced the distressing deaths of two of her beloved pets. A third cat under her care required intensive treatments after consuming the implicated raw food. Fortunately, a fourth cat in her household that consumed only canned food showed no symptoms, underscoring the severity of the recall.

Symptoms of bird flu in cats include fever, lethargy, discharge from the eyes or nose, breathing difficulties, tremors, seizures, and even blindness. The FDA strongly advises pet owners to remain vigilant for these signs and seek veterinary guidance immediately if observed.

To prevent risks of transmission, pet handlers should rigorously disinfect areas and wash their hands thoroughly after being in contact with any potentially contaminated products. According to health authorities, no human infections related to this recall have been reported thus far, yet the precautionary measures cannot be overstated.

Reacting to these challenges, Wild Coast Raw has taken decisive action by transitioning its product line to fully cooked poultry recipes. These new products are anticipated to hit the market starting in March 2025, aiming to reassure consumers and eliminate future avian viral threats in their pet food products.

For those still in possession of the recalled items, the recommendation is clear: dispose of the products immediately. Customers are also encouraged to approach their retailers for refunds, as a gesture to make amends for these unsettling events.
